VC's Online Teacher Training Courses in Canvas (OTTCC) Spring 2017

Description: The OTTCC is the Online Teacher Training Course in Canvas that prepares instructors to teach online by combining best practices in online education, current trends in educational technologies, and modular design in Canvas.

Course Dates: Each course will have a kick off day for more information about the course and its expectations. When registering, please choose the kickoff time that corresponds to the course dates.

Session 1:
Kickoff Time: Wednesday February 8, 2017 @ 5:30 PM
Course Date: February 13, 2017 - March 13, 2017

Session 2:
Kickoff Time: Wednesday March 15th, 2017 @ 3:00 PM (during spring break)
Course Date: March 20th, 2017 - April 17th, 2017

Session 3:
Kickoff Time: Wednesday May 17th, 2017 @ 5:30 PM
Course Date: May 22nd, 2017 - June 19th, 2017

Competency Based : This is a competency based course that allows expert online instructors to receive credit for imported work from a previous online course while helping new instructors and instructors new to Ventura College understand the best practices and learning management skills necessary in succeeding in online instruction at Ventura College.

Time Commitment: For the instructor who is new to teaching online, this course is a four week course with roughly 8 to 10 hours a week of learning, participation, and course design; however, an experienced instructor in online education at Ventura College or elsewhere will find that after importing from a Desire to Learn course or another course management system that he or she can demonstrate competency in a variety of topics in this course to proceed through the entire course at a faster pace.

Monday Night's at 5:30: Ventura College will host optional one hour training sessions online on topics relevant for the week. (details below for web conferences)

Friday Mornings at 10: Ventura College will host workshops for faculty in the LRC Training Studio to help with current quesitons about the course.

What is in the course? This course is comprised of timely and relevant information as well as consistent best practices from Ventura College's Distance Education Advisory Group and the Online Education Initiative. The course focuses upon the concepts and the goals from the OEI Course Rubric for Online Course Design, the Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning from @One, and the Introduction to Teaching in Canvas Courses from the OEI Project.

We are also using best practices that we developed from our usage of Desire 2 Learn, the previous Online Teaching and Learning Course in Desire 2 Learn, and the Distance Education Committee recommendations from these past several years. This course will introduce a variety of best practices in online teaching, some teaching strategies, some management techniques to improve student success, and course design needs in Canvas. Welcome to the OTTCC! There is something for everyone.

Optional Meeting Dates for Four Week Course:
